Madras Bridal Fashion show pays tribute to weavers

Madras Bridal Fashion show true to its tradition has respected the hands that crafted the beautiful sarees, lehengas, veshtis , shervanis and dresses that were on display in the fifth edition of the show here on Boxing day.

The show honoured six traditional weavers.

The event was organized by Shand and Dene and presented by PVR and co-presented by Kirtilals. Sri Kumaran Silks and Chellani house of Silver had also supported the programme.

There were five collections from designers, Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor, Deepthi Ganesh, Vaani Raghupathi, Kirtilals and Sri Kumaran Silks also displayed their works with traditional weavers.

Arjun Kapoor said that without the support of the weavers nothing could have been done and the products were sourced from weavers outside of Banaras and from Maharashtra.

He said that he used to buy regularly from the weavers and not to use middlemen. Deepthi also echoes the same. She said, “Weavers had walked into my store and told me that they were not able to sell even a single saree in two months and during Covid, I started a wide range of collections and with digital presence we could take weavers from small villages to global space.”

She adds, “I tried doing live and interactive shows with my clients who could then order the garments online.”

The theme for the fifth edition of Madras Bridal Fashion was a palette of warm colours.

Diamond jewels of Kirtilals along with the sarees of Sri Kumaran silks were used by the models during the ramp walk in the show. Actresses Dushara Vijayan and Vedhika Kumar walked the ramp as show stoppers for their collections respectively.

Make up artist, ND Ashmitha , actors Pranitha Subhash, Iniya and Samyukta Shah walked the ramp spotting various collections.

Dr. Ganesh of Kancheepuram weavers and C. Rajeev, noted researcher in Handlooms and their intricacies who is also the Director of the Think Tank, Centre for Policy and Development Studies were present in the function.
