Puducherry farmers to get 7.1 crores as rain relief

The farmers of Puducherry who were affected by the recent rains will get an amount of Rs 7.10 crore as rain relief.  This was announced by the Agriculture Minister of the UT, Theni Jayakumar in a statement on Friday.

This is in addition to an amount of Rs 6 crore sanctioned by the Government of India as rain relief to the farmers of Puducherry. The Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Dr. Tamilisai Sounderarajan had announced about the central assistance on Wednesday.

The government of Puducherry will provide relief at Rs 20,000 per hectare. The agriculture department along with the state revenue department had assessed that 2985.6 hectares of paddy, vegetables and tuber crops were affected due to rains in Puducherry.

487.79 hectares of agriculture were affected due to rains in Karaikal and 79.53 hectares in Yanam also. The assistance will be beneficial to 6054 farmers in the Union Territory of Puducherry which include 5749 small and marginal farmers (SMF) and 305 other farmers (OSMF).

The minister Theni Jayakumar in the statement said that the relief will be directly credited into the accounts provided by the farmers and the agriculture department officials including Directors would monitor this.
