Pharma major Pfizer sets up its biggest Asian drug hub at IIT Madras research park

Chennai, May 5 (NBPS)

The pharmaceutical company Pfizer has set up its biggest Asian hub at IIT Madras research park at an investment of US dollar 20 million which is around Rs 150 crore. The pharma major in a statement said that this was a 61000 sq ft research and technology centre.

The facility which is the first of its kind in Asia set up by the company will employ 250 scientists and professionals including pharmacists, formulation scientists, analytical scientists with experience, microbiologists and biotechnologists, data scientists and programme managers and chemical engineers.

This centre according to the company will be one of its 12 global centres set up worldwide and integrates two functions, pharmaceutical sciences and Global technology and Engineering Centre of Excellence.

The pharmaceutical arm is set up for dedicated development of anti-infectives, sterile injectables and oncolytic while the Global Technology and Engineering Centre of Excellence would be processing pharmaceutical ingredients and manufacturing technology for the supply of medicines to patients.

The Centre at IIT Madras research park will conduct development of active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished dosage forms of value-added formulations, controlled release dosage forms and ready to use formations.
