TN Museum of Possibilities for the disabled turns into a major attraction

The Museum of Possibilities for the Disabled opened by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has turned into a major attraction for the disabled and the common people alike.

There are several assistive and adaptive devices that help persons with disabilities at the Commissionerate for the Welfare of Differently Abled on the Lady Wellington Campus.

The Museum of Possibilities is built on a domain-specific model with live, work, and play as major domains. The museum showcases various adaptations and technologies that will help people with all kinds of disabilities independent. It features various features from a tactile geometry set and drawing tool, Braille Cube, alphabet plate, tactile wrist watch, tactile scrabble board with coins, talking bathroom scale, a signature guide to adapted colour keyboard, appropriate paper-based technology (APT), standing crutches, pull down cloth hanger, adjustable backrest and various other adapted kitchen utensils and bathroom utilities.

M. Krishnamoorthy whose son Deepak is a 21-year-old with disabilities while speaking to BPNS said, “The Museum of Possibilities is a place that provides the necessary confidence to those with special abilities and I have brought my son over here. It’s a huge relief for people like us who is worried about the future of our children.”

He said, “The museum aims to Help People With Disabilities (PwDs) participate in various events and could try new technologies and find if it works for them.”

The museum also displays products made by disabled persons that visitors can buy and it also has a café run by six disabled persons.

The museum also has a skill development centre for the PwDs and a dedicated space has been allocated in the museum to encourage and promote employment opportunities for PwDs.

The presence of space for employment opportunities for the PwDs has been accepted by the families of PwDs. Murugan. R, while speaking to BPNS said, “ I am a person with disabilities and the Museum of Possibilities is a place wherein we can get some solace as employment opportunities and skill development opportunities.”
