The revenue development of Tiruppur district in Tamil Nadu is studying the prospects of razing down a 300 feet long wall constructed allegedly by Upper caste people at Mettupalayam in Kangeyam taluk of the district
Villagers on Monday lodged a complaint with the Tiruppur district collector who immediately directed the taluk revenue authorities to take up the matter.
An official with the Tiruppur district administration while speaking to BPNS a said, “ The wall is constructed at the natham ‘pormaboke’ land. Villagers told BPNS that they do expect the district administration to immediately raze
Down the wall.
Kumar Raman, a farmer while speaking to BPNS said ‘ Some private individuals who are well connected and extremely powerful with strong political ties built the wall separating the villagers from them and in local parleys is known as the untouchability wall”.
He said that the wall has created major problems for villagers as even ambulances could not
Be brought in.
After the district collector intervened in the matter, the taluk and revenue officials decided to raze down the wall.
In Tamil Nadu even after more than sixty years of Dravidian politics, there are no palpable changes in the attitude to Untouchability, fights, and killings.
