Chennai, Aug 1 (BPNS )

The Government of India has approved a proposal by the Government of Tamil Nadu to release a commemorative postage stamp in honour of freedom fighter Ondiveeran who had fought against the British. The postal department is likely to release the commemorative stamp on August 20, 250th  birthday of the freedom fighter.

Ondiveeran, it may be noted was a trusted lieutenant of Pulithevan Army that had fought against the British bringing in major casualties to the invading force and the valiant fighter had led many of the fights from the front.

He was a native of Nerkattum Seval near Sankarankoil in the erstwhile Tirunelveli district which is now bifurcated and is now part of Tenkasi district.

The DMK government under M. Karunanidhi laid the foundation for a memorial in 2011, “Maveeran Ondiveeran Manimandapam” in Palayamkottai, and the subsequent AIADMK government of J. Jayalalithaa inaugurated the memorial with a statue of Ondiveeran.

Many Tamil scholars and intellectuals have also called upon the state government to rename, the Government Arts and Science College at Sankarankoil after Ondiveeran.
