Parandur airport at Chennai to cost Rs 20,000 crore, Chief Minister: M.K. Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin said that an estimated amount of Rs 20,000 crore would be required for the second airport in Chennai, coming up at Parandur.  In a press statement on Tuesday, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu said that the new Parandur greenfield airport and the old Mennambakkam airport will function simultaneously.

He said that the new airport will have terminals that can handle 10 crore passengers in a year, two runways, apron, taxiways, cargo, and various other facilities. The statement also said that the final cost for the construction of the airport will be arrived at after a detailed project report (DPR) is prepared.

The land acquisition and other steps would be taken only after the site clearance is submitted to the Ministry of Civil aviation. After this, the state will approach the central government for an ‘In- Principle’ approval for the project.

It may be noted that the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India has sanctioned the construction of a second airport in Chennai.
