Rain drenches Delhi for third day, traffic affected

New Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) Light to moderate rainfall continued to lash the national capital for the third consecutive day on Saturday putting commuters in a tight spot as they faced heavy traffic jams on several roads.

The Delhi Traffic Police issued several advisories for the commuters and asked them to plan their journey accordingly as many roads in the city were affected by water logging, uprooting of trees and potholes due to incessant rains.

Water logging was there on the following roads — Firni road near Dhansa bus stand Najafgarh, Abai road near Abai Marg Chanakyapuri, Aurobindo marg near Adchini red light and Rohtak Road near Rajdhani park metro station.

The waterlogging caused massive traffic jams in various parts of Delhi leaving commuters stranded in long queues of cars at major roads.

The trees were uprooted at outer ring road near QU block Pitampura, Mehrauli Gurugram road near Y-point Chhattarpur CDR chowk, Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg near Kaveri Apartment Masoodpur, Aurobindo marg near Adchini red light and Mahipalpur Chattarpur Marg in front of Fortis Hospital.

The torrential rains caused potholes on several roads making the stretch unfit for travel. The roads include, Vande Matram marg near SPM u-turn, Ring road near Ashram to Kilokri, Najafgarh Kapashera road near Bijwasan Gaon, Ring Road near Delhi Cantt metro station Mayapuri, Ring road from Azadpur to Shalimar Bagh, Ashoka road near Patel Chowk round about, Sansad Marg in front of Niti Ayog and Talkatora Road near RML roundabout.

Delhi’s base monitoring station — Safdarjung observatory — had since morning received 10 mm of rainfall from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Sunday. The Palam area of Delhi received maximum 21.9 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 27.2 degrees Celsius, seven notches below the season’s normal while the minimum temperature was 22.6 degree Celsius.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi will witness a generally cloudy sky with light rain on Sunday. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 28 degree Celsius.
