No party elections till Supreme Court hearing, EPS

- September 30, 2022

Chennai, Sept 30 (BPNS)

The deposed leader of the AIADMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O. Panneerselvam (OPS), and his faction are happy after the Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) faction in a submission before the Supreme Court stated that elections for the post of party general secretary would not be held until the apex court hears the case on November 21.

It may be noted that the AIADMK is going through a bitter power struggle between the two senior leaders of the party, OPS, and EPS leading to the party being cornered in the political climate of Tamil Nadu.

On July 11, 2021, during the AIADMK general council meeting, O. Panneerselvam and those close to him were expelled from the party which was challenged by OPS in court. While a single bench of the Madras High Court stayed the expulsion of OPS and his associates a division bench of the same court lifted the stay order.

OPS faction moved the Supreme Court and on September 30, Friday, the EPS faction submitted before the court that it would not conduct elections for the post of general secretary till November 21 when the apex court hears the case.

A senior leader of the OPS faction while speaking to BPNS said, “ The move of EPS and his associates to conduct election for the post of general secretary of AIADMK is now on hold. We are expecting a positive verdict in favour of OPS from the Apex court. Let us wait and see.”

Many of the OPS faction leaders were also happy about the Supreme Court sending notice to EPS and the latter agreeing not to hold elections till November 21 when the Apex court hears the plea.

The AIADMK is facing acute internal squabbles with both the OPS and EPS factions coming out against each other and with the Supreme Court to hear the case on petition filed by OPS, it has to be seen where the AIADMK will move from this position.
