Slugfest escalates in AIADMK as OPS appoint new office bearers

Chennai, Oct 26 (BPNS)

The fight in the opposition AIADMK has escalated with the deposed leader of the party and former Chief Minister, O. Panneerselvam(OPS) appointing office bearers in various districts of the state.

Panneerselvam who claims himself as the coordinator of the party has appointed over 500 office bearers in various districts of the state. It may be noted that the AIADMK in its July 11 general body meeting had expelled Panneerselvam and his associates from the primary membership of the party. His bitter opponent and former co-coordinator of the party, Edappadi K. Palaniswami was anointed as the interim general secretary of the party in the July 11 general body meeting.

After his expulsion from the party, Panneerselvam moved the Madras High court with the single bench of the court suspending the posting of the new office bearers and staying the expulsion of OPS and his associates. However, the division bench of the Madras High Court vacated the stay and directed to maintain the status quo of the July 11 party general council meeting which had expelled OPS.

The OPS faction moved Supreme Court which stayed the proceedings and ruled that no elections be carried out in the party till the court hears the tussle between the two factions. The court is to hear the case on November 21.

With OPS announcing the posting of office bearers of the party, the AIADMK official faction led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami has come up in arms against the decision. A senior leader of the AIADMK while speaking to IANS said, “The Supreme Court is to hear the tussle between the two leaders on November 21, and what was the hurry for announcing the posting of new office bearers.”

Another senior leader aligned to the official faction while speaking to BPNS said, “ I am not coming out in the open as the case is being heard in the Supreme Court on November 21, and OPS appointing new office bearers is not good given that the case regarding elections to the interim general secretary is being heard by the Supreme Court and EPS has obliged to this and has told the open court that there would not be any elections till the apex court gives a verdict.”
