Chennai, Nov 14 (BPNS)

The Tiruchi district collector, M. Pradeepkumar has said that the order for deporting the four Sri Lankan convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, currently lodged at the rehabilitation camp, was expected in 10 days.

The district collector was interacting with media persons after meeting the Sri Lankan convicts at the rehabilitation camp at Tiruchi on Monday. The four Sri Lankan nationals who are lodged at the camp are Shanthan, Murugan alias Sri Haran, Robert Payas, and Jayakumar.

He said that as per procedure a communication would be sent from Tamil Nadu to the country concerned and the concerned foreign country would respond after verifying whether they are citizens of that nation.

The Tiruchi district collector said that based on this communication the foreign nationals would be deported from India, and added that the deportation orders are likely to be received within 10 days.

Pradeep Kumar said that arrangements have been made to provide basic amenities to the four convicts separately.  The district collector said that two of the convicts Robert Payas and Jayakumar wanted space for walking within the camp and that he had informed them of necessary arrangements being done for the same.

The Tiruchi district collector informed media persons that the convicts would be provided food as sought by them and added that blood relatives of the four convicts would be allowed to meet them.

It may be noted that six convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case were let off by the Supreme Court of India after spending three decades in prison. Of these four are Sri Lankan nationals, Shanthan, Murugan alias Sri Haran, Robert Payas, and Jayakumar, the remaining two are Indians and from Tamil Nadu. They are Nalini Sri Haran and Ravichandran.

While Nalini and Ravichandran have walked free, the four Sri Lankan nationals are lodged at the rehabilitation camp in a bid to deport them to their nation.
