One of the oldest bird sanctuary in the country Vedathangal bird sanctuary in Tamil Nadu is now buzz with the humming sound of migratory birds. According to bird watchers around 5000 migratory birds have arrived in Vedathangal sanctuary.
Suralirajan. M.R., an avid birdwatcher while speaking to BPNS said, “It’s a treat to watch the arrival of migratory birds in a rhythm after crossing continents and this season also around 5000 birds have arrived in Vedathangal sanctuary, one of the oldest in the country. “
He said that a large number of bird watchers, students, and visitors will flock to the Vedathangal sanctuary in the days to come. The keen bird watcher said that spot-billed pelicans and open-billed storks arrive first.
Spoon-billed storks, spot-billed pelicans, whistling ducks have arrived at the sanctuary since the past five days and they are mostly feeding from the Madurantakam lake and paddy fields. The Vedathangal tank has after the heavy rains filled upto 12 ft against its capacity of 16 ft.
Surulirajan said that some special species were located during the present season. He said that open-billed storks will build nests only on barringtonia trees.
Fulvious whistling ducks will be arriving in large numbers by the beginning of December in the Vedathangal bird sanctuary after traversing thousands of kilometers crossing the Central Asian region.
