Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 4 (BPNS)

The ruling CPI-M which is in a corner after the Latin Catholic church came out heavily against the government and police in charging criminal cases against several people from the community including the Thiruvananthapuram Arch Bishop, Thomas J. Netto seems to settle the issue.

In a bid to mollify the Latin Catholic church, the CPI-M Thiruvananthapuram district secretary, Anavoor Nagappan met the Arch Bishop, Thomas J. Netto at the Bishops house on Sunday. The meeting assumes significance after the Latin Catholic church and the government are in an all out war against each other following last Sunday’s attack of Vizhinjam police station.

It may be noted that arch rivals, CPI-M and BJP has joined hands in quelling the agitation against the Vizhinjam sea port which is being constructed by the Adani group.

The Latin Catholic church, it may be recalled is a powerful group and has  deep strength amongst the fishermen community. From Kodungallur in Thrissur district to Thiruvananthapuram, the Church has strong presence in 32 assembly constituencies. The Latin Catholic community never shies away from voting and in constituencies where the community is strong, the voting percentage is always high.

The CPI-M does not want to continue in confrontation with the Latin Catholic church and hence the CPI-M Thiruvananthapuram district secretary meeting Arch Bishop, Thomas J. Netto assumes significance.
