The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin held a high-level meeting of ministers and officials at the seat of power –the Secretariat, on Thursday afternoon and directed officials to be on high alert following a surge in the Covid -19 cases in several countries.

Stalin told officials to be alert and to take safety measures in places where people gather in large numbers given the arrival of tourists during the festive season.

It is to be noted that there has been a high increase in Covid cases in China, South Korea, France, and United Kingdom. China has reported 1.48 lakh fresh cases and around 480 deaths recently.

The Tamil Nadu state Public health department has already written a letter to the Union Health Ministry on the mandatory tests at international airports in Tamil Nadu for passengers arriving from China and Hong Kong.

The Chief Minister in the high-level meeting of ministers and officials reviewed the existing situation of beds, oxygen beds, availability of medicines, and other infrastructure in place in Tamil Nadu.

However health department officials, it is learned, have informed the Chief Minister that 97% of the people of the state have taken the first dose of Covid -19  vaccine and 92% have been inoculated with the second dose of vaccine and hence the possibility of a major surge of the pandemic in the state is unlikely.

It may be noted that India has reported 4 cases of Omicron BF.7 sub-variant which is the main cause of the Covid surge in China and other countries.
