Chennai, Jan 18 (BPNS)
The by-elections to the Erode East assembly seat will take place on February 27. The Election commission announced that the candidates can file nominations upto January 31. Nomination papers will be verified on February 8th and the candidates can withdraw their nominations till February 10th.
The Counting of votes will be held on March 2nd.
The by-elections to the Erode East assembly constituency were necessitated following the sudden demise of the sitting MLA, Thirumahan Everaa of the Congress party who passed away due to a heart attack on January 4, 2023, at Erode.
It may be noted that Thirumahan Everaa of the Indian National Congress had defeated Tamil Manila Congress leader, Yuvaraja by a comfortable majority of 8904 votes.
The by-election to the Erode East constituency is a major opportunity for the AIADMK and its interim general secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS). The AIADMK has been on the losing side of elections since 2019 general elections when it lost all but one of the 39 seats to loksabha from the state to the DMK and its allies.
With the AIADMK facing political turbulence after the expulsion of former Chief Minister, O. Panneerselvam (OPS), V.K. Sasikala and TTV Dhinakaran. The powerful Thevar community of South Tamil Nadu which has been a traditional vote bank for the AIADMK is antagonistic to the party after the expulsion of the senior leaders all of whom belong to the Thevar community.
The by-polls to the Erode East assembly constituency can be considered a major testing time for Edappadi K. Palaniswami and if he wrests the seat from the Congress, then he can turn into a major power centre of the AIADMK in the days to come.
