Kerala HC wants guidelines for CCTV camera installation

The Kerala High Court has directed the State Police Chief to come out with appropriate guidelines regarding the installation of CCTV cameras.

The Kerala High Court has directed the State Police Chief to come out with appropriate guidelines regarding the installation of CCTV cameras. It was on the other day the court came out with such an instruction while considering a writ petition in which the petitioner alleged that his neighbor has focused the CCTV surveillance cameras towards his compound and residence.

Considering the petition Justice VG Arun observed that prima facie he thinks that, in the guise of installing CCTV surveillance cameras for security reasons, individuals should not be permitted to snoop into the affairs of their neighbours.

He further added, “The situation calls for the issuance of orders or guidelines dealing with the manner in which CCTV cameras are to be installed.”

He then directed the State Police Chief to come out with appropriate guidelines in this regard, in consultation with the State Government.

The court also suo motu impleaded the police chief as an additional respondent in the case.

The case has been posted for further hearing on February 17.
