The Krishnagiri district collector has commenced probe into a complaint filed by the Dalit political party, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) that a twin tumbler system existed in the district.
VCK office bearers had on Monday petitioned the district collector,Dr. V. Jaya Chandra Bhanu Reddy that the people belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes are demarcated in the district and that there were cases of several villages operating twin tumbler system in hotels and restaurants.
It is to be noted that there are some hotels and small tea shops in rural areas of Tamil Nadu who provide tea and water to those belonging to the Dalit community in a separate tumbler. This is called as the infamous Twin tumbler system.
According to the local police, the VCK has complained of 11 villages in Anchetti taluk itself practicing twin tumbler system in the district.
The villages include hotels and tea shops in Belpatti, Manjukondapalli, Arthakkal, Doddur, and Devakoundanandodi among others. The police said that there are six more villages in the district that discriminate against the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes.
It may be noted that in the Vengavail panchayath of Pudukottai district, a drinking water tank that supplies water to a Dalit colony was found with human excreta deposited. During the inquiry, the Pudukottai district collector found that twin tumbler system was widespread in the district.
