Tribal woman dies of suspected tiger attack in TN

A 50-year-old tribal woman, Maari was found dead on Wednesday morning at Theppekadu in Madumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR).

A 50-year-old tribal woman, Maari was found dead on Wednesday morning at Theppekadu in Madumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR).

The woman, according to her family and relatives had ventured into the forest area in Theppekadu on Tuesday evening for collecting firewood. After she was not found returning till Tuesday night, the family informed the forest department and commenced a search.

On Wednesday morning the forest department officials could find the dead body of Maari 200 metres from Thepekadu elephant camp.  Forest officials told media persons that the body had injury marks likely due to the attack by a tiger. Pug marks of the tiger were also found near the dead body, according to the forest officials.

The body of Maari is sent to Gudalur Government hospital for postmortem and forest officials told media persons that the confirmation of whether she died of a tiger attack could be given only after the postmortem report comes.

The forest department immediately handed over a  compensation of Rs 5 lakh given to the family of the deceased Marri.
