Noted singer of South India and Padma Bhushan awardee, Vani Jayaram is considered as one of the greatest voice of South India. She has sung more than 10,000 songs spread across 19 languages and her rendering was considered a god gifted.
She had in an indepth knowledge of Hindustani music and her golden voice was vibrant even at the age of 78 when she passed away. Her songs are considered immortal and the songs that she had sung in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada are still big hits across these states. Several generations of music lovers across the country were in awe at the voice of Vani Jayaram who enthralled the audience with her gifted voice which many used to address as golden voice.
Born Kalaivani in Vellore to a traditional Tamil Iyengar family of classical musicians. She was initiated into the world of music by Ranga Ramanuja Iyengar and later Kadalur Srinivasa Iyengar, T.R. Balasubramanian, and R.S. Mani.
She was employed at the State Bank of India and she quit the job after she commenced training for Hindustani music under Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan of Patiala Gharana. Vani Jayaram is considered one South Indian singer who has an in-depth knowledge in Hindustani music and was at ease in rendering Hindi, Gujarati, and Haryanavi songs.
Her first music album was a duet with Kumar Gandharva composed by Vasant Desai.
A highly accomplished musician, Vani Jayaram was at east with old music directors as well as new generation directors. She was a favourite for both Ilayaraja and A.R. Rahman.
