TN BJP for Union govt support to arrest assaulters of fishermen

The Tamil Nadu BJP state president, K. Annamalai has written a letter to the Union External affairs minister, S. Jaishanker to intervene in the incident of attack of Tamil fishermen on the high seas on Wednesday late night.

The Tamil Nadu BJP state president, K. Annamalai has written a letter to the Union External affairs minister, S. Jaishanker to intervene in the incident of attack of Tamil fishermen on the high seas on Wednesday late night. Annamalai in a letter to the Union minister said that the attackers had come in four Sri Lankan boats.

The owner of the Tamil Nadu fishing boat Murugan was grievously injured and his three fingers were chopped off. Annamalai in the letter said that the intruders entered the Tamil fishing boat and attacked the fishermen mercilessly. Around 5 lakh worth materials were stolen from the boat, the BJP president said.

The Tamil Nadu BJP president called for the Union External affairs minister to take up the matter with the Sri Lankan government to identify the assaulters. He also wanted the Union minister to intervene to help retrieve the stolen belongings of the Tamil fishermen.

The BJP president also sought punishment for the assaulters in the court of law.

It may be noted that a group of six fishermen from Nagapattinam were attacked near Point Calimere , Kodiyakarai on Wednesday late night. The fishermen said that there were 12 assaulters in four boats allegedly from Sri Lanka. They robbed the fishermen of a GPS gadget, transceiver and battery and around 150 kg of the fish catch from the Nagapattinam boat.

The fishermen told media persons that the assaulters boarded their boat when they were few nautical miles southeast of Kodiyakarai and when the boat owner Murugan resisted this, his three fingers were severed.

Fishermen demanded the Indian Coast Guard to step up patrol along the International borders to prevent the entry of Sri Lankan fishermen from entering the Indian side.
