The Tiruchirappalli Superintendent of Police, Sujith Kumar who himself hails from Bihar said that there was no threat to the guest workers in Tiruchi and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
He said that there are 2784 guest workers in Tiruchi which include 406 women workers and said that most of them are working in the area since the past ten years.
He condemned the fake vidoes that were circulating about the alleged attacks on the migrant workers from North India. Sujith Kumar while speaking to reporters said ,” Such incidents did not happen in Tiruchy or elsewhere in Tamil Nadu. Senior police officers have interacted with migrant workers and no one has complained of any threat to them.”
The Tiruchy Superintendent of Police however said that north Indian migrant workers have left for their home states as March 8th was celebrated as Holy in North India and they have left for participating in the festival and not because of any threat.
The SP said that the employers of Tamil Nadu were looking after their workers well and have been providing accommodation and food for the guest workers near their workplace. He said that there are students from North India at the prestigious National Institute of Technology- Tiruchy (NIT- Tiruchy) and the Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU).
Sujith Kumar said that he has not received any complaints of harassment from students in these institutions. He also said that the Tiruchy district police have issued a helpline number and some calls had landed in that number but none was for help regarding any harassment of North Indian workers.
