Movie star turned politician Vijayakanth has called upon the Central government Public Sector Undertaking, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd (NLCL) against acquiring farmland at Cuddalore for its expansion programme.

The Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader told media persons that the ruling DMK must stop being spectators in the issue and intervene at the earliest.

He called upon the NLC to provide justifiable compensation to the villagers whose land was acquired by the central government public sector undertaking. Vijaykanth also said that the central government and state government schemes are for the welfare of the people and decried the use of force by the police against protesting villagers whose land was being acquired.

It is to be noted that the NLC is in the process of acquiring land from the villagers of Cuddalore for its second round of expansion.  The police have also set up barricades at the entrance to the villages like Rangamathevi, Kilpadi, Karivetti and Adanur where the land is being acquired.

The AIADMK interim general secretary and former Chief Minister, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) had come out strongly against the acquisition of land against the will of the farmers.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) of the powerful Vanniyar community has been in the forefront of the agitations against the land acquisition and  the state president of the party and former Union Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss had strongly protested against the acquisition.
