Dalit outfits in Tamil Nadu is planning to step up agitation and increased campaign against the lethargic police action over the presence of human excreta in a drinking water tank in Vengaivayal in Pudukottai district of the state.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Dalit social outfits like Ambedkar movement have visited the Vengaivayal colony in Pudukottai district to take action against the perpetrators who had put human excreta in the over head drinking water tank.

While the incident occurred in December 2022, the Velanallur police could not make a breakthrough in the case and its now being investigated by the Tamil Nadu CB-CID. The elite agency of the Tamil Nadu police have questioned more than 147 people but still is not able to make any headways into the case.

The police have now stepped up vigil in the colony after Tamil Nadu intelligence have reported on some groups trying to break the overhead drinking water tank. The police have now erected checkposts and conducting a through check of those visiting the Dalit hamlet.

Police sources told BPNS that the vigil has been increased as there were tips from intelligence on the possibility of some groups creating disturbance and unrest in the area.

Several Dalit people living in the colony has gone on record that the police was trying to frame people from their community as culprits and have called upon stringent action from the higher authorities on the same.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin had in the state legislative assembly said that stringent action would be taken against those behind the incident and added that police would use iron fist to put down such activities.

However Dalit outfits and political parties and local people have demanded a CBI investigation into the case as no headway is being made by the local police.

R. Jagannathan, a local Dalit person in Vengaivayal colony while speaking to BPNS said, “The CBI investigation is the need of the hour. We have to live in a decent manner upholding our integrity and honour. For that, the culprits have to be brought to book and the state police is delaying it since December 2022 when the incident occurred. We demand a CBI investigation into the same.”
