Chennai, May 9( BPNS)

The Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday conducted checks at a special camp for foreign nationals that is situated close to the Tiruchi Central prison.

Three mobile phones, a tablet personal computer, a laptop, and a modem were seized in the raid.

Around 300 police personnel were involved in the searches led by two Deputy Commissioners of Police, North, and South.

It may be noted that a raid was conducted on July 22 during which several incriminating documents linking the inmates to an international drug cartel, mobile phones, and tablets were seized. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested nine persons during the raids of July 22.

The special camp houses over 125 foreign nationals including around 60 Tamil nationals. During the previous raid 150 mobile phones were seized.

Police sources told BPNS that the raids were conducted based on information on the presence of narcotic substances in the camp.

It may be noted that the now defunct LTTE has been trying to regroup itself and Tamil Nadu was becoming a major hot spot for its revamping process. A former senior intelligence operative of the LTTE, Santukam alias Sabesan (47) was arrested in October 2021 after he was linked to the smuggling of drugs worth Rs 3000 crore and AK-47 assault guns and pellets that were seized in the Arabian Sea near the Vizhinjam coast in Kerala.

The arrested people had stated that they were raising funds for the regrouping of LTTE.
