The Greater Chennai Police have collected a fine of Rs 13 crore in pending drunk driving cases for the past four months. Special drives during the last four months 12,551 pending drunken driving cases were disposed off and an amount of Rs 12.99 crores was collected.
Chennai police in a statement said that as many people were not paying up fines voluntarily, special focus was given for retrieving the fine amount. Call centres were established at several points in the city and violators were informed of the pending fine dues and were asked to dispose of their dues at these call centres. Police said that 10 call centres were established in ten different areas of Chennai to collect the fines.
According to Chennai traffic police, drunken driving is the main cause of a majority of fatal accidents and hence a special drive is on to book all violators as well as those whose dues are pending.
The police are warning the violators that if the pending amount was not paid, the police would move court to get warrants of attachment from courts to attach movable property. The police have said that the attachment need not be the vehicle involved in the accident but any other movable property including any other vehicle.
371 warrants have already been issued by courts for attachments of property in lieu of fine amount are under process.
Police said that there are more pending cases and a crackdown is on to retrieve the balance of the pending dues.
