Chennai, May 30( BPNS)
The opposition AIADMK is gearing up for 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with the party commencing internal surveys for selecting candidates.
Sources in the AIADMK told BPNS that the 2019 Lok Sabha election debacle followed by the loss of power in 2021 assembly election has put the party in a corner. Added to this was the exit of senior leader and former Chief Minister, O.Paneerselvam (OPS) from the AIADMK after serious differences with the present general secretary of the party, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS).
The AIADMK which has categorically stated that it would head the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu is selecting candidates on a foolproof basis without any complaints from any corner regarding the final selection of party candidates.
A senior leader of the AIADMK who is close to Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) while speaking to IANS said, “ The party is conducting a detailed internal assessment on the candidates and how these candidates are accepted in the respective constituencies. The party is using the services of seasoned professionals to provide inputs and advise regarding the elections and selection of candidates.”
The AIADMK will fighting with its back to the wall as the OPS faction has left the party which is out of power since 2021 and the public acceptability of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Another major difficulty the party is suffering is the final seat sharing with the BJP which is keen to contest in more seats in 2024 elections from Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami(EPS) is keen that the party expose all the negativities of the Stalin government.
It may be noted that the AIADMK has lost heavily in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by loosing all but one seat in Tamil Nadu.
The party along with the BJP contested 39 of the total seats but lost in 38 seats winning only Theni loksabha constituency. Interestingly the party leadership has given a letter to the Lok Sabha speaker, Om Birla stating that the Theni Lok sabha MP, O.P. Raveendranathan was not a member of the party. It is to be noted that Raveendranathan is the son of OPS. This makes the AIADMK literally with no Lok Sabha MPs in parliament.
The party is hence to win the maximum number of seats from Tamil Nadu and is doing all-out efforts for the same. The party is doing proper homework to get maximum seats from the state and have already commenced discussions with its ally BJP for a concrete coalition without any flaws.
