The Mastero of South Indian music world, Ilayaraja turned 80 on Friday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was the first among a galaxy of visitors who paid rich tributes to ‘Isaignani’ on his birthday.
In a twitter post, Stalin said, “He does not string musical instruments, he caresses our hearts.” The Chief Minister paid rich tributes to the music mastero.
The Chie Minister said that his late father M. Karunanidhi was highly appreciable of the music of Ilayaraja and spoke of him as ‘Isaignani’ which can be termed as the sage of music.
South Indian Superstar turned politician, Kamal Haasan took to twitter and greeted Ilayaraja on his birthday and hailed him as the ‘Emperor of Music’.
Ilayaraja’s music essentially reflects on social events and reflects the rich Tamil culture.
Many common people have commented in twitter how his music has given shape to a wide range of emotions. Ilayaraja was born in Pannaipuram village in Theni district of Tamil Nadu and during his carrier spanning six decades, the mastero has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Marathi.
The song ‘Amma entrazhaikath Uyirillaye’ in the 1992 movie ‘Mannan’ directed by P. Vasu on mother and her love was one of the best songs composed by the mastero. ‘Vaa Ponmayile’ in Poonthalir is an outstanding love song with a tinge of sadness.
The music of Ilayaraja evokes high spirit and a soothing melancholy.
Interestingly ‘Modern Love Chennai’ which is an anthology of short films and streaming in Amazon Prime Video since May 18 have 13 tracks composed by the mastero alone. The anthology has 18 tracks of which the rest five are composed by young music directors like Yuvan Shankar Raja, Sean Roldan and GV Prakash Kumar.
In the 1980s and 1990s, it was clearly Ilayaraaja who dominated the Tamil music industry. In the 1980s he composed music for over 40 films a year with the decade showing him composing music for 400 films.
In Malayalam movies, Manasinakkare, Raasathanthram, and Pazhasi Raja, Ilayaraja’s music was an indispensable part for the success of these movies.
The music maestro has won five national awards other than honours from several state governments.
