TN for detailed research on state animal Nilgiris Tahr

Tamil Nadu forest department has appointed a five member research team for Project Nilgiris Tahr, for the protection and conservation of the state animal.

Chennai, June 8(BPNS) 

Tamil Nadu forest department has appointed a five member research team for Project Nilgiris Tahr, for the protection and conservation of the state animal.

 The team will conduct field visits covering Nilgiri tahr habitats in Tamil Nadu for a month and will interact with the local NGOs, field staff and people who are involved in conservation of the state’s animal.

 The team will function from the Tamil Nadu forest department campus in Coimbatore North till a new building is constructed.

 S. Balasubramanian, Field Director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) briefed the research team on the nature and scope of the ambitious project on the Nilgiris Tahr. The Tamil Nadu government had launched the conservation of Nilgiris Tahr project in 2022.

The GIS application will be used for tracking the animal population and senior scientists from the World Wild Life Fund for Nature who were present during the briefing explained the usage of technology in mapping the animal population.

The team or researchers is headed by the Research coordinator –cum senior scientist, S. Priyanka. The team comprises B. Subbaiyan (Ph.D Botany), S. Gokul Prasath (Msc. Zoology), N. Rajesh Kumar (Msc Environmental Science) and K. Manigandan (Msc Wild life Biology).
