A sub-urban train traveling from Moor Market station in Chennai to Tiruvallur derailed at Vyasarpadi railway station on Sunday. The train derailed when it was passing through the Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi railway station. Southern Railway sources told IANS that the wheels of second coach electrical multiple unit of the rake derailed.
The maintenance staff of the Chennai central station rushed to the spot and are engaged in rectifying the track and the coach. Several people alighted from the train and walked out of the station to the nearest bus station.
The derailment led to the train services from Tiruvallur and Avadi stretch was stopped for a couple of hours. A few trains were detained at Perambur and Villikvakkam stations, sources in Southern Railway told IANS.
This is the third derailment of a train in a week. An empty coach of Jans Shatabdi train derailed near Basin Bridge on June 9. The train was taken to the yard for cleaning work.
On June 8th the fourth coach of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway train that was traveling from Mettupalayam to Conoor derailed. However, no one was injured.
