Chennai, June 18 (BPNS)
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, KS. Alagiri said that the arrest of BJP leader SJ Suryah was for ‘defaming’ Madurai MP, Su Venkitesan and questioned the Union Finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman supporting Suryah.
Alagiri said that many in BJP consider that posting defamatory posts and tweets are a part of their party work. He came out harshly against Union finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman and said, “Union Finance minister is condemning the arrest of someone who posts nasty tweets. I condemn this.”
The TNCC president was addressing media persons after the commemorative speech on the 116th birth anniversary of former minister and Congress leader, P. Kakkan at the state Congress headquarters, Sathyamurthi Bhavan in Chennai.
When asked about the arrest of Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji, Alagiri said that there was no need to arrest the minister past midnight as he was a traitor.
The TNCC president said that law enforcement agencies could arrest a person past midnight if he was a traitor and who had spoken against India’s sovereignty and who had joined the ranks of the enemies of the country. He said that one who smuggles arms and who is a terrorist can also be arrested past midnight and without notice. However he questioned the wisdom of arresting an elected representative like Senthil Balaji in midnight after questioning for 18 hours and without allowing the services of his lawyer. He asked whether Balaji was a traitor or an anti-national.
The Congress leader also asked why the BJP MP Brijbhushan was not arrested even after top women wrestlers of the country had alleged sexual misconduct against him.
He said that while the BJP MP was given protection a non-BJP people’s representative was treated like a dog and said that the Congress oppose such a demarcation vehemently.
The senior leader also reminded that Narendra Modi as Chief Minister of Gujarat had retained Amit Shah as a minister even as he was in police custody.
The Tamil Nadu Congress chief lashed out against the state Governor, RN Ravi for opposing the recommendation of the Chief Minister to reallocate the portfolios of Senthil Balaji.
