Chennai, July 4 (BPNS)

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in certain areas of Tamil Nadu till July 6th.  The weather department in a statement said that cyclonic storms over the Bay of Bengal is the reason behind the heavy rain prediction for Tamil Nadu.

The IMD officials said that the prevailing weather system and strong westerlies could lead to thunderstorms. The weather department also said that The Nilgiris and Coimbatore would get rains of very high intensity.

Madurai, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts are likely to get heavy rains in the next couple of days while Chennai district will get moderate rains.

The IMD also said that the strengthening of monsoon current in Kerala would bring rains over adjoining western ghats  leading to rains in parts of Tamil Nadu. It may be noted that Tamil Nadu has so far received 6 cm of rain which is normal, according to experts.

Valparai received 6 cm of rain while Kodaikanal and Periyakulam received only 2 cm of rain on Monday. The IMD said that Chennai, Karaikkal and Yercaud received light to moderate rains on Monday.

Tamil Nadu is expecting copious rains in catchment areas in Kerala so that the dams turn full including Mettur dam which is the lifeline of several delta regions of the state.
