Tamil Nadu Governor, RN Ravi has said that he would never clear the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) if it were up to him. He also added that the exam was going to stay in the country.
The Tamil Nadu Governor was responding to a question by the parent of a student during a felicitation of students from Tamil Nadu who had secured high marks in previous years NEET. The parent asked RN Ravi when he would clear the bill to ban the NEET and then he responded by saying, “ I am telling you very frankly, I will never give clearance to NEET exemption bill”.
He however said that the bill had gone to the President as it was subject on the concurrent list of the constitution. He said that it was only the President who is competent to give clearance and added, “Given to me, I shall never clear it and be sure on it”.
The Tamil Nadu Governor said that the children of Tamil Nadu were victims of wrong propaganda by vested interest lobbies. He said that medical admissions were a Rs 1000 crore business prior to the introduction of NEET and added that an MBBS seat was costing Rs 1 crore for each seat and added that if a college had 150 seats, the management used to make Rs 150 crores for it. The Governor said that it was all out corruption and all out making money.
He said that NEET had reduced corruption and made it possible for poor students to get admission. He said that he did not want Tamil Nadu’s students to be intellectually disabled and wanted the children to compete and be the best.
The parent Amasayappan who asked the question said that his daughter had scored 623 out of 720 marks and cleared NEET but he added that he was concerned about other children who could not make it due to lack of resources.
He said, “ I am a government employee and I could spend Rs 5 lakh and shift my daughter to four schools.”
