Tamil Nadu police is in pursuit of certain people who have cheated many luring huge returns through crypto investments.
Sources in the police said that in Thoothukudi a person identified himself as a social media influencer lured a youth that he would provide heavy returns if he invested money. The youth ,according to sources in the police invested around 70 lakh rupees in different installments.
While there were some returns at the initial days, for the past three months there was no returns. When the investor contacted the person, his phone was switched off and there was no response.
The youngster filed a complaint with the Thoothukudi police who commenced an investigation.
However sources in the police told BPNS that this was only a tip of the iceberg and lot of people including women, retired employees, unemployed youths and even NRI returnees have invested money in several crypto schemes.
According to a senior police officer with the Cyber security wing of the Tamil Nadu police, money to the tune of more than 50 crores would have been siphoned off by the Cryptocurrency racket.
The Cyber wing of the Tamil Nadu police which has cracked several online frauds is confident that they would crack this case also. Sources in the police told BPNS that many people are reluctant to lodge complaints as some have parked their illegally earned money and some have parked money for which they have not paid taxes.
However, police is conducting a detailed probe into the number of people and the details of their investment in the cryptocurrency network.
