- MMM opens five new operating theatres at their hospital adding to the existing four.
- The increasing number of cardiothoracic surgeries have required these additional OTs
- The OTs conform to the latest standards nationally and internationally.
- MMM will also establish an Emergency Centre within two months
In its Ruby Jubilee (40th) year, the Madras Medical Mission has added five state-of-the-art operating theatres for cardiothoracic surgeries that incorporate the latest of technologies available in the country.
Driven by the passion for excellence in patient care, MMM has invested a total of Rs. 15 crores on these Operating theatres and a soon to be established Emergency Centre which will comprise a Rapid Assessment and Resuscitation area, a Staged Management area and a Counselling room.
Since its inception in 1982 as a Christian charitable society, MMM has adopted the model of a ‘social enterprise’, which are organizations that operate with the efficiency and effectiveness of a business enterprise, the internal accruals being ploughed back into the social enterprise without being distributed to the promoters.
“As we celebrate the Ruby Jubilee of our contribution in the social sector, we will also be making an investment of around Rs 80 to Rs 100 crores to establish an Integrated Campus for Nursing and Allied Health Sciences with a 100 bed Community Hospital at our Nolambur campus within the next two years,” said Mr. Babu Daniel, Principal Adviser and Governing Board Member.
“The OTs that we have just commissioned conform to the latest National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare settings (NABH), World health Organization (WHO) and American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) norms,” Mr. Daniel added.
“Establishing additional operating theatres was the need of the hour for us since we have been seeing a yearly growth of 20-30% in the cardiothoracic surgeries we have been performing in the last few years. We are delighted to have five additional theatres now – making it a grand total of nine – that can help us address the backlog of surgeries that have been building up,” said Dr. Ajit Mullasari, Director – Cardiology.
About the new operating theatres, Dr. S. Rajan – Director, Cardiac Surgery said, “They are designed to ensure the highest air quality, with individual Air Handling Units (AHU) and terminal High Efficiency Particulate air (HEPA) filters. The HEPA filters in the air conditioners have got terminal filters which are less than 0.3 microns in size, ensuring that 99.97% of pathogens are eliminated. The AHU’s automatically go into a setback mode when the theatres are not in use thereby conserving energy yet maintaining continued flow of filtered air.”
The walls of the OTs are finished with a special antibacterial cladding material and the doors are automatic hermetically sealed sliding steel doors with vision panels. There are X-ray viewing boxes and television screens to transmit images from the catheter lab to the operating theatre and to the auditorium for teaching purposes. Each theatre is linked to the clean corridor through a passbox which will reduce the number of times the main door needs to be opened during the surgery.
High-end interventional Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) scopes are placed in specialized cabinets fitted with ultraviolet light and filtered air after its sterilization to prevent cross contamination among patients. The design of the theatres is such that there are different zones such as clean and sterile.
