After incessant rains from Saturday night onwards, Chennai city is waterlogged and inundated. This is the heaviest rain in Chennai ever since 2015. The Public Works Department opened the shutters of the Chembarambakkam dam in Chennai, and water is being released at the rate of 500 cusecs. The shutters have to be lifted following the water level touching 21 feet against its maximum height of 24 feet.
Officials said that the catchment area of Chembarambakkam has received 52 mm rainfall and the reservoir is receiving water at the level of 600 cusecs.
Chennai received the highest rainfalls since 2015 and water entered the homes in several low-lying areas after incessant rains on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Heavy rains from Saturday night 8.30 pm till Sunday 5 am.
In Ambattur area at the DT colony, water entered the houses and streets were inundated with water and the residents of the area are waiting for the water to be drained into Korattur lake by breaking the bund which is generally done when water logging takes place in this place.
Anpumani, a local trader at Ambattur while speaking to BPNS said, “Waterlogging has taken place and in several houses in DT colony area water has entered the homes. We are expecting the authorities to break the bund so that water is drained into Korattur lake.”
Flood alert is issued to those living in the low-lying areas of Sirukalathur, Kavanur, Kundrathur, Thiruvmudivakam, Vazhuthiyamepedu, Thiruneermalai, Adayar, and parts of Ambattur, Ashok Pillar areas also.
Heavy rains have led to water flooding in many parts including Purasaiwalkam, Anna Nagar, Kodambakkam, and Vayasarpadi subway in Chennai.
Fire and Rescue department has already deployed several teams in all the rain-affected areas to drain out water in association with the Public works department staff.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are also kept in reserve and the state revenue department is closely monitoring the situation of water and if rains continue unabated, people would be rehabilitated to safe places. Revenue department has already opened a control room.
