Chennai rains: Holidays declared for schools, colleges in four districts

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has on Sunday declared holidays for students of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts of the state on Monday and Tuesday following heavy rains that have inundated the city.

Chief Minister while addressing media persons after paying a visit at Padi, Purasawalkam, and Kolathur in Chennai said that men and machinery were kept ready for any emergency operations during the heavy rains.

Stalin said that four teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to Madurai and Cuddalore districts for any emergency. He also said that 50,000 food packets have been distributed in about 44 rehabilitation centres in the state since Sunday morning.

Chief Minister also called upon the people to hold their travel plans as the weathermen have predicted heavy rains for the next three days also.

He said that officers were on high alert and all the state government departments were working in cooperation with each other.

The Chief Minister also said that all-electric poles were under constant monitoring and officials have been instructed to take necessary steps.

The regional centre of the Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rains in Chennai and other parts of the state.
