Coimbatore district administration has issued flood alert over banks of Bhavani river and a team comprising 300 fire personal and a team of 50 commandos to attend flood-related issues in Mettupalayam, Pollachi, and Valparai.
Monsoon is high in the adjoining areas of Western Ghats and with heavy rains for the past few days, fire personal are kept ready for any eventuality.
Flood alert is issued due to water being discharged from the Piloor dam as the reservoir received an inflow of 8000 cusec on Tuesday and the water level touched 97.5 feet and with just short of maximum capacity, the water has to be discharged to Bhavani river.
Heavy rains have triggered a landslide in Yercaud area and vehicle traffic was re-routed in the area. Train service is not operated in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Mettupalayam and Ooty due to heavy rains as tracks damaged by landslides are not getting restored.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a prestigious train service of the Railways and is frequented by tourists who reach the place.
In the Kanniyakumari district, six houses were damaged due to heavy rains and rains have led to water flow in dams in the district. Fire Force personal are alerted by the district administration to face any eventuality.
