The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the depression that led to heavy rains and waterlogging in Chennai has crossed the North Tamil Nadu coast.
The IMD stated that the depression crossed by Thursday evening pushing surface wind speed to a maximum of 45-55 kmph.
The weather department in a series of tweets said, “Depression crossed the north Tamil Nadu coast close to Chennai between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm today. The depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west northwards with a speed of 12 kmph during the past six hours.”
The meteorological department said that the depression crossed with a maximum sustained wind speed of 45-55kmph gusting to 65kmph. The IMD in another tweet said” It lay centered at 6.30 pm over north coastal Tamil Nadu close to Chennai. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area by tomorrow the 12th November morning”.
In another statement, IMD said that a fresh low-pressure area was likely to form over south Andaman sea around November 13. The statement of the weather department is considered by the state revenue and disaster department as a timely warning to prepare themselves for any eventuality, senior officials in the department said.
