Chennai, Sept 20 (BPNS)

Eight  fishermen from Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu were arrested on Tuesday early morning by the Sri Lankan Navy. They were arrested for crossing the International Marine Border Line (IMBL) and reaching Sri Lankan territorial waters.

The eight fishermen had gone fishing from Jegadapattinam fishing harbour on Monday morning. Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group told media persons that the eight fishermen were arrested at 2 am on Tuesday morning.

The arrested are  Tamilselvan ( 37) who is the owner of the vessel, C.Viji ( 38), A. Dinesh (26), G. Ranjith (27), S. Pakkirasamy (45), S. Kamal(25), S. Punudhu( 41) and M. Karthik (28).

The arrested along with the mechanized fishing vessel was taken to the Kankesenthurai naval base in Sri Lanka.

It may be noted that several Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy for crossing the IMBL and at Katchatheevu island. The Tamil Nadu fishermen had blocked roads at Pudukottai and Rameswaram during earlier arrests and the main demand of the fishermen was that the costly mechanized vessels were also in the custody of the Sri Lankan navy leading to heavy financial burden.
