Girija Vaidyanathan, former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu is appointed as the Special member of the National Green Tribunal(NGT), Southern bench. Justice K Ramakrsihnan is heading the bench.
Saibal Dasgupta ,the present expert member is transferred to the Eastern Bench of the National Green Tribunal(NGT).
She was appointed by the Principal bench of the National Green Tribunal ,New Delhi on April 5, Monday. An Environment advocacy group , Poovulagin Nanbaragal had earlier filed a Public interest litigation(PIL)the Madras High Court stating that she did not have proper experience in Environment related activities.
The National Green Tribunal(NGT), Southern Zone has been proactive in several issues including taking action on ground water contamination against SIPCOT ,Cuddalore. The bench comprising Justice K Ramakrsihnan and Expert member, Saibal Dasgupta has ordered the preparation of a comprehensive action plan and a detailed health study on the effects of extreme contamination of ground water by industries in the SIPCOT industrial area, Cuddalore.
