Thiruvananthapuram, May 20
The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) has appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the alleged custodial torture of a young Dalit woman named Bindu by the Kerala police.
In a statement issued by Swami Bhadranand, ABHM’s Kerala state president, the organisation condemned the incident as a shocking example of ongoing atrocities faced by Dalits in “God’s Own Country.”
“Bindu has become a victim of a police witch-hunt. The continued marginalisation, injustice, and exclusion faced by Scheduled Caste communities in Kerala is deeply disturbing,” said Swami Bhadranand in the memorandum submitted to the President.
He demanded that the police officers responsible for the assault be booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and dismissed from service.
According to ABHM, Bindu approached the Chief Minister’s Office seeking justice, but the response she received was so dismissive and insensitive that it allegedly pushed her toward attempting suicide.
The organisation alleged that mainstream political parties in Kerala only pay lip service to Dalit causes and fail to offer real support during times of crisis.
“The government is disinterested in the welfare and safety of Dalits, who are only viewed as vote banks. Instead of protecting them, the political system exploits them, unleashes police violence, and loots funds meant for their development,” the statement added.
Swami Bhadranand further emphasised, “A Dalit is a Harijan — a child of Hari, the Supreme Vishnu. This nation belongs to the Dalits. No one else should receive respect and benefits that Dalits are denied.”
He demanded strict legal action not only against the police officers who allegedly stripped and humiliated Bindu , but also against the family members who triggered the abuse.
Those responsible, he said, must be removed from service without pension benefits and held accountable under the law.
“No one should think Dalits are alone in Kerala. The ABHM will ensure that justice prevails and will not allow anyone to escape legal consequences. The time for change is long overdue,” Bhadranand stated.
