A 32-year-old Ph.D. scholar doing research at the Indian Institute of Technology- Madras committed suicide by hanging at his residence.

Chennai, April 2 (BPNS)

A 32-year-old Ph.D. scholar doing research at the Indian Institute of Technology- Madras committed suicide by hanging at his residence. The deceased, Sachin Kumar Jain was a native of West Bengal and he was found hanging from his residence at Velachery in Chennai. Police said that on March 31st he had put a WhatsApp status,” I am Sorry, not good enough” and his friends reached home upon seeing this and found him hanging in the room.

Sachin was a PhD research scholar at the Mechanical Engineering department of IIT –Madras.

This is the third incident of suicide death in IIT- Madras in the year 2023 and demands have begun for conducting mental health surveys among the students in the premier institution.

According to police, Sachin was staying at Brahmin street, Velachery along with two of his friends. He, had allegedly committed suicide.

The Chennai police have registered an FIR against an assistant professor of an arts college belonging to the Kalakshetra Foundation, after a former girl student complained that he had sent her obscene messages.

The assistant professor Hari Padman was booked under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Woman Act. The Adayar All women police registered the FIR against Hari Padman after the girl student met the Chennai city police commissioner Shankar Jiswal who promptly forwarded the complaint to the Adayar.

The Director of Public Health in Tamil Nadu has made masks mandatory in all public health centres in the state. This is following a huge increase in the number of Covid -19 positive cases in the state. It is to be noted that while the number of fresh Covid 19 cases in the first week of March was 21 while on March 31st it was 123.

The manifold increase in the number of Covid 19 cases has led to the state health department directing the health centres to make wearing of masks compulsory.

The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Public Health and Preventive medicine issued directive on Saturday following the joint advisory from the Indian Council of Medical Research( ICMR) and the Union Health Ministry.

The Omicron variant XBB.1.16 is increasing in large.

The Christian community celebrated ‘Palm Sunday’ ahead of Easter at the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. Velankanni, it may be noted is a prominent pilgrimage centre for Christians of South India and most of the devotees reach here ahead of Easter celebrations.

Special services were held for the devotees in English, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi at the Velankanni church on Sunday during the ‘Palm Sunday’ celebrations.

Palm Sunday is observed as the last Sunday ahead of Easter celebrations.

The Christian’s believe that 2000 years before Jesus Christ returned back to the City.
