Chennai, July 5(BPNS)

The first bench of the Madras High court comprising of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy has directed Karti Chidambaram MP and his wife Srinidhi to appear before the Income Tax authorities.

Rejecting a petition filed by Karti Chidambaram, the Madras high court first bench said that it cannot intervene in the matter and directed Karthi Chidambaram and his wife Sri Nidhi to appear before the Income-tax authorities.

The IT department had served notice to Karti Chidambaram and his wife Srinidhi in a case related to the disproportionate amassment of wealth. The Income Tax had served notice on an amount of Rs 7.5 crore rupees in the accounts of Karthi Chidambaram and 2 crore in the account of his wife Sri Nidhi.

The court directed both Karti Chidambaram and his wife to appear before the Income Tax department as early as possible. Karti was involved in several issues and in 2017 CBI had charged a case against him along with the INX media promoters Peter Mukherjea and his wife Indrani and had charged them with conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and misconduct.

The CBI in its affidavit said that Karti had used his influence in the finance ministry while his father was the Union finance minister and helped INX media get approval for foreign investment from three Mauritius-based investors.
