A 47-year-old firewood cutter of Vembar in Thoothukudi has filed a complaint with the Soorangudi police station alleging that he was forcefully subjected to vasectomy at the Government PHC in Sayalkudi Ramanathapuram.
Muthuserman (47) of Sinthamanai Nagar, Vembar In Thoothukudi in his complaint lodged with the Soorangudi police station on Monday said that four people, Soorvali, Muniasamy, Kasilingam, and Selvaraj had met him on February 25 and taken him to Sayalkudi PHC in Ramanathapuram district and forced to conduct vasectomy at the PHC. He said that a cheque of Rs 1100 was handed over to him after the procedure.
However, a doctor at the PHC who doesn’t want to be named while speaking to BPNS said, “ The procedure was done with his permission and No- scalpel vasectomy method was followed.”
The doctor said that Muthuserman had given his blood sample before the vasectomy and that he was given medicines after the procedure. Doctors said that Muthuserman was quite aware of the vasectomy and that there was no target for doctors to conduct vasectomy procedures in Tamil Nadu.
The doctor but agreed that an amount of Rs 150 to field workers who bring people for vasectomy was a small incentive.
He also said that Muthuserman and his wife Panchavarnam had come to the PHC after the vasectomy and had been given counseling. The doctor said that people from far and wide reach Sayilkudi PHC in Ramanathapuram as it was awarded the best performing PHC of the state for three consecutive years.
However, in several villages of touts take drunkards and illiterate people for the small incentive they get but why an amount of Rs 1100 was given to Muthuserman is a big question as the doctor himself has said that an amount of Rs 150 was provided as an incentive to those field workers who bring in people for vasectomy.
When contacted, the station house officer of Soorangudi police station said that a complaint has been received and police is investigating it. The officer refused to further elaborate on the progress of the case.
