Thiruvananthapuram, June 23
Following the resounding victory of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Nilambur by-election, the results from postal ballots have emerged as a strong warning signal for the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala.
The voting pattern among government employees, who primarily cast postal votes, appears to reflect growing dissatisfaction with the state administration.
According to official data, of the total 1,322 postal ballots cast in the constituency, LDF candidate M. Swaraj secured only 501 votes—just 38% of the total—indicating a clear erosion of support from the government workforce.
In contrast, UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath received a commanding 650 postal votes, marking a decisive lead.
The outcome is being interpreted as a protest vote by government employees, particularly against the Finance Department’s policies, which they allege have withheld certain benefits and dues.
Many see the result as a manifestation of deep-seated resentment within the government sector.
BJP candidate received 86 postal votes, while independent candidate P.V. Anvar garnered 70.
The postal ballot figures, though small in number compared to the total votes cast, are considered politically significant as they reflect the mood of government staff—often a bellwether group in Kerala politics.
Political observers suggest that the LDF must urgently address the grievances of state employees to avoid further backlash in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
