Chennai, May 31( BPNS)
A gang of five armed robbers tied up a TASMAC watchman to the pole and escaped with thousands of bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) in the early hours of May 31 at Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu.
Police at the Kalayarkoil station has registered a case of dacoity against the five-member gang. A senior police officer at the Kalayarkoil police station while speaking to BPNS said, “The TASMAC outlets were shut in the district as in other parts of the state following the lockdown.The supervisor at this TASMAC outlet at the Kollangudi Muthur salai had further secured the outlet by sealing the shutter using a welding machine. The department had also posted a watchman as there was a huge stock of liquor.”
The police officer also said “The watchman, Kannan 58, was tied up to a pole on the early hours of May 31 by a five-member gang and they broke open the TASMAC outlet and escaped with the booty. According to the watchman, the five-member robber gang was armed and made good their escape within an hour.”
The watchman was later untied and released by passersby after the daybreak.
The Sivaganga police ADSP, Muraleedharan visited the crime scene and fingerprint experts are also pressed into service. Police said that the three teams were formed to find out the culprits and arrest them.
The supervisor of the outlet, Muthukrishnan while speaking to BPNS said ,” We did take extra precaution including welding the shutter and appointing a watchman but the robbers were armed and they made good their escape with thousands of bottles of liquor and we have yet to ascertain the value of the liquor stolen by the robbers.”
