The Coimbatore district administration has directed all schools and colleges in the district to open anti- drug clubs. This is following the rising menace of narcotic use among the students of the districts.
The Coimbatore district collector, G.S. Sameeran in a statement said that NCC, NSS, and scout teams will assist in the formation of clubs against the drug menace.
The district administration will open a narcotic coordination cell to coordinate with the stakeholder departments like police, excise, and health for taking action against drug abuse. The district collector also said that stringent action will be taken against the drug peddlers and FSSAI authorities to prevent the menace.
The Coimbatore district administration has already conducted awareness programmes in two colleges and many schools in the district against drug menace and narcotic usage. Coimbatore Range DIG, MS Muthuswamy and District Police Superintendent, V. Badarinarayanan headed the awareness programmes at colleges in rural areas of the district along with the district collector, G.S. Sameeran.
Coimbatore City police commissioner, V. Balakrishnan said that the police would take special attention to shops and establishments near schools and colleges to prevent drug peddling.
As part of the awareness programme, the anti-drug clubs will have awareness banners along with contact numbers of the concerned police and district administration officials.
