Thiruvananthapuram, June 29 (BPNS)
With the upward climb of Covid-19 cases continuing in the state, a special alert was issued to Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts by the health department. The alert is against the backdrop that these two districts were having the most active caseload in the state. At the same time, for the second consecutive day, more than 4000 fresh cases were reported. Of the 4805 cases reported, most were from Ernakulam, Alappuzha, and Thiruvananthapuram – 985 each and 978 – respectively. In the wake of spiraling numbers, state health minister Veena George demanded wholehearted support from the people to prevent the spike in cases.
“The alert has not been limited to two districts. It applies to all districts. Though there is a spike in cases, the situation is not that alarming. It’s because those who seek hospital care or critical care are comparatively low. But that doesn’t mean that one could lower their guards against the virus,” said Veena.
According to the health department, of the 27,991 active cases (till June 28) those admitted to hospitals were 1285, those in ICU were 239 and those in ventilators were 42.
“Of those seeking medical care a majority were aged ones or those having comorbidities or unvaccinated ones. Returning to the basics is the key. That means, using a facemask, hand sanitizing, and washing hands,” said a health department official.
Meanwhile, the health minister reiterated that halting the normal life to control the spread of the virus is not at all feasible and living with the virus is the only option. “But while doing so everyone should fulfill certain responsibilities. It includes following Covid appropriate behavior, getting vaccinated including the booster dose, undergoing Covid test upon having symptoms and others,” added Veena.
