Stalin, Kanimozhi pay homage to Father Stan Swamy

Chennai, July 18(BPNS)

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K.Stalin and other senior leaders of the state including, Kanimozhi MP,  former Union minister, Dayanidhi Maran MP paid floral tributes to the Tribal activist, Father Stan Swamy died at a Mumbai hospital after prolonged judicial custody at Taloja Jail in Mumbai in the Bhima Koregaon case. The Chief Minister and other leaders attended the mourning at Loyola College, Chennai on Sunday.

Stan Swamy who hails from Tamil Nadu was a Jesuit priest and a human rights activist working among the Tribals in Jharkhand.

A statement from the Chief Minister’s office said that Father Stan Swamy had fought for the rights of the tribal people of the country and that he had often raised questions over how several aspects of the Fifth Schedule of the Indian Constitution have not been implemented.

The statement also said that Stan Swamy had called upon the government to form a Tribal Advisory council to ensure safety, welfare, and development of tribals and had fought for the rights of the tribals in Jharkhand state.

 The Chief Minister in the statement also said that the tragedy that had befallen Father Stan Swamy who had fought for the downtrodden and the deprived should not happen to anyone.

State higher education minister K. Ponmudi, State Minorities Commissioner Chairperson, Peter Alphonse, and Viruthagai Chiruthagal Katchi (VCK) leader Sinthanai Selvan MLA were also present along with the Chief Minister and other senior leaders.
