Stalin writes letter to external affairs minister over Lankan Navy firing TN fishermen

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K.Stalin in a letter to Union external affairs minister, S. Jaishankar to exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government not to attack Indian fishermen in the sea. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in the letter referred to the firing by Sri Lankan Navy at Tamil Nadu fishermen at Kodiyakkarai.

Stalin in the letter said that a permanent solution must be arrived as the attack by the Lankan nay is affecting the livelihood of thousands of Indian fishermen.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in the letter said that while the Indian fishermen were fishing in a registered boat near Kodiyakarai on August 1 , the Lankan Navy opened firing injuring a fisherman, Kalaiselvan in his head. He was being treated at Nagapattinam government hospital while nine other fishermen in the boat escaped miraculously.

Stalin said, “Unleashing violence on our fishermen without following international laws and practices is condemnable.” The Chief Minister in the letter further said that India cannot remain a mute spectator to this outrage by the Lankan Navy and that solution has to be found out immediately.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also said that the attack by the Lankan Navy has caused great unrest among the people living in the coastal areas of the country and called upon the Government of India to act immediately to protect the lives and equipment of the Indian fishermen.
